Foreign Law Clerk

Law Firm Busson & Sikorski, P.C. – NY, NY

We are seeking Foreign Law Clerk who will work part-time under direct supervision of the firm’s partners, and will specialize in post-Soviet legal systems (including Russian and Ukrainian law). Foreign Law Clerk will primarily assist partners with and perform independent tasks related to the firm’s international estate, real estate, estate planning, trusts, transactional, wills and litigation practices. In addition, the incumbent will facilitate communication between foreign clients of the post-Soviet origin and partners of the firm, and will perform other tasks as required.


  • Master of Laws degree or its equivalent
  • Excellent academic credentials
  • At least a year of work experience in a law firm setting in one of the post-Soviet countries
  • Fluency (both verbal and written) in English, Russian and Ukrainian
  • Proficiency in WestLaw, LexisNexis, legislative and judicial databases of post-Soviet countries (including the Unified Judicial Registry of Judgments of Ukraine);
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other law office software (including Amicus)

Preferred requirements:

  • Admission to the Bar in one of the post-Soviet jurisdictions


  • Conducting complex and demanding legal research in English, Russian and Ukrainian on issues related to the firm’s international law, estate planning, wills and decedent’s estate, real estate, trusts, litigation, and transactional practices
  • Resolving conflict of laws issues between the U.S. law and Russian, Ukrainian or other law
  • Study of complex case law and legal documents to investigate facts and law of cases
  • Preparing reports of findings, memorandums, legal instruments, and other legal documents in English, Russian and Ukrainian
  • Analyzing which jurisdiction a legal dispute between private parties should be heard in and what local laws and procedures would apply
  • Determining legal causes of action under U.S. and laws of post-Soviet countries
  • Drafting documents pertaining to settlement and planning of estates, such as wills, trusts, and similar documents to carry out the international part of estate planning of the firm’s clients’
  • Being the contact point in international estate planning transactions and negotiations for interested parties
  • Assisting partners in instituting title searches to establish ownership of local and international real estate
  • Assisting the firm’s clients from post-Soviet countries with their legal issues in their home jurisdictions
  • Performing other tasks as required
